The other day I was writing on the creative process issue on Facebook and I thought that it would be a good idea to develop this a little bit further.
Sometimes, after designing a whole collection, I feel kind of sad and empty. The whole process  is pretty difficult and  it somehow makes me suffer. Sometime ago I was not aware of this but now after some hard thinking I ´ve learnt many things about the creative process and I´m starting to understand what is really going on. I always say this in my classes: creation comes along with high suffering doses. It is about dealing with a part of our brain that we do not completely control. It is about searching with no results, it is about finding  but not feeling sure enough about that we´ve found. The creative process is nevertheless a beautiful one, it is such a magic way to go, the magic of ideas rising up. But it is also a very hard process in which ideas come but we still do not know how.
When I design a collection I can not help thinking about past collections I´ve designed, and  every single design that I´ve made comes to my mind, every pocket,  every clever color combinaton, every witty  garment, and you know what, I just do not know how I had such ideas or where dide they come from, they just popped in mind. Sometimes the most successful garments are the ones I designed just a couple of weeks before the deadline. I try to respect this last minute intuitions because they use to work pretty well.

Designing is not about wandering around wainting for the ideas to come, it is  pretty much the other way around. It is more about making ideas come to you. This is why I try to engage in many different activities to get inspired such as reading, watching nature, taking pictures, art,  listening to music, sleeping, dreaming, and so on . It is about looking for inspirational themes to work and rework with. It is about making sketches, tearing them apart and making them again.. Yes, all these steps help to get your own good ideas but there is nothing that garanties  that taking this path is going to take you somewhere....

I think that the tricky and stressing part of the creation process relies on the fact that one needs to handle uncertainty. Uncertainty is the certainty that, no matter how hard you try, no great result is for granted.
When I have to get involved in other different tasks (that is the thing about running a company)such as calculating the prices or editing catalogues and lookbooks I just simlply do it,  no matter how much time I have to put into it. It does not make me suffer at all. It is something I know how to do from the beggining to the end, it has no secrets. But when it is time to start designing a new collection I feel my nerves ready to explode because of a twofold process in which, in the one hand, I feel fear of not beign able to create something great , and, in the other hand, I feel excited about taking the mágical and uncertain  path of creation.
Now that we´ve just showed our new next winter collection to our clients I feel very happy. It has been hard but I´m proud of the outcome and I´m already tinking about the netx collection. I´ve got six months ahead. It is time to create new thing!.

(I leave you with one of the pictures of our Hidden Place collection. Next time I will show you the whole collection and explain what the inspiration theme has been this time and who has collaborated with us)

NO SE PUEDE

"Imagination creates reality, and as desire is a part of imagination, the world we desire is more real than the world we passively accept."
Northrop Frye

Today I want to share with you a thought. I´ve always heard around me people saying that  I could not do whatever I thought was wise and reasonable. You can not do it, that was the slogan and still is.  It is always the same song, it is the sound of our fear far away from any empiric reality facts.
I remember when I wanted to start up my company. Many people around me said that my way was a tricky and risky path to take ( cause it is always better to get a steady job as everybody else, and because we tend to imitate the mass and get lost in it when we feel fear as sheep do. Then, when I first talked about opening a design school, it was the same story, people warning me about the many futurible troubles. Later when we decided to be sincere with our clients and share our philosophy and our way of thinking with them, people used to claim that it was not the proper strategy to deal with customers because brands should not talk politics. Brands should not have strong values, brands should have light personalities, get neutral and politically correct, and avoid potential enemies. As I said before, we hear fear talking  whenever we talk about changing things and getting rid of everything we hate about society. People aways say the same thing:" it is not posible". It is always better to conform and be realistic. You know what? When everybody think that something is impossible  it is then when it gets really impossible, that´s the way it is.

To me, reality has a kind of plastic nature. All is posible in it, or at least you can try it all. It is true that the path I´ve taken is a  constant struggle. I ´m always looking for change among many peolple who is in fear and prefer not to change at all. It is not easy to be independent and step aside of the crowd. It is a permanet fight against fear, about fear in people words. And it feels so good when you achive your goals and show the world that the impossible thing to do was not that impossible, when you say, look, we can do it. All is posible, nature is such a miracle, so humans are.
Recentely I was talking to someone about Valentina, her education, Waldorf schools and the pedagogy behind them ( values, emotions, real learning,, nature and harmony). He really liked the concept, said that it was ideal and beautiful  and added that he would rather give his children a standard education so they would better integrate in society later on. He also expressed his fear to raise his children in a different manner.  Again fear leads our choices. We want something but we do not dare to go for it and finally opt for what we don´t really desire. If everybody think this way nothing will change, not education, not society, nothing at all. As I´ve  many times said, lets be bold and change the world!!
